Features > Fisher's exact test

Fisher's exact test concerns the proportions of some characteristic among different groups. It determines whether the difference in proportions observed from samples is likely to reflect real differences in the underlying population, or if it may simply be due to random variation.

An exact test operates by simulating every possible random experimental outcome - this tells us precisely how often we would see the observed relationship due to chance. Often this test is only performed for the case of two comparison groups, however Biostats Calculator is able to perform the simulation for any number of groups. However if the data set is too large for this to be feasible, the calculation will be approximated with the chi-square test.

After selecting χ2 and Fisher exact from the menu, simply enter the number of individuals with and without the characteristic, for each group being studied. Biostats Calculator will perform a hypothesis test to determine whether there is a statistically significant difference between the groups.
